‘iHope’ Churches Together Youth Event in Brewood
|
On Friday, June 20th, an exciting and successful youth evening was held in
Brewood, attended by 15 young people from all our local churches.
Starting at six o’clock that evening, they enthusiastically joined in a
whole range of activities, which included a shared meal which they had
helped to prepare.
After watching a short film showing the plight of homeless children in South
America, the young people used recycled cardboard boxes to build themselves
street shelters. Much ingenuity was shown - and quite a bit of competition
between girls and boys. We have to say that the girls won! |

An informal collection taken during the event has raised £80 for the
‘Toybox’ street children's charity.
Following further refreshment of sausage rolls and chocolate cake (!) they
then took part, with parents and leaders, in the monthly ‘prayer walk’
around the village; prayers were said outside all the social venues, pubs
and restaurants.
The next activity was to ascend the tower of St Mary & St Chad, up to
parapet level, admire the view in the gathering dusk, and release
helium-filled ‘Hope 08’ balloons with their prayers attached. This was a
very special moment, watching as the balloons bore our petitions
heavenwards. |
|
This left time for some very creative artwork, inspired by the events of the
evening.
As a finale, part of the movie ’Pay It Forward’ was shown - the theme of the
film - changing the world for the better - fitted in very well with the
ideas which had been discussed during the evening. Hot chocolate was served
and final prayers were said around a candlelit cross in front of the church
altar.
By then it was midnight, parents were arriving, and a tired but happy band
departed for home. Thanks to all who led, supported and took part in the
event - when is the next one?
